America’s Best Selling Guns of 2023 | What’s Your Guess for the Top 3?

The firearm landscape in the U.S. has seen some serious shifts over the last couple of decades. A Gallup survey from 2021 found that nearly 88% of gun owners now have firearms mainly for protection—up from 65% in 2000. As you can imagine, that change in attitude has fueled a major boom in gun sales, especially for firearms meant for self-defense.

According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), gun production in the U.S. surged dramatically between 2020 and 2022. We’re talking over 38.2 million firearms, a 57% jump compared to just a few years before. The big winner in this spike? Pistols, especially semi-automatic handguns, which have been flying off the production line. Manufacturers cranked out an average of 6.1 million pistols annually between 2020 and 2022—up from 3.5 million per year in the previous three years.

These production numbers reflect the guns Americans are most interested in buying. A new sales report from GunBroker.com, the largest online marketplace for guns and ammo, shows that popular trends in the gun industry held steady through 2023.

Using data from a Gun Genius report, which tracked sales on GunBroker.com, I put together a list of the 25 best-selling firearms in America for 2023. Guns are ranked based on how many were sold.

Handguns dominate the list, with 15 out of 25 spots, including 12 semi-automatics and three revolvers. There are also eight rifles, mostly bolt- and lever-action types, and two pump-action shotguns. This preference for handguns reflects the growing focus on personal protection and versatility.

Keep in mind that this list only includes online sales, and buying a gun online isn’t like shopping on Amazon. Firearms are typically sent to a local, federally licensed dealer, where you’ll need to pass a background check before picking up your purchase. This system helps ensure responsible ownership while making online sales accessible to those without a nearby retailer.
